Dual boot dilema

Soooooo..... It turns out the charting features of OpenOffice calc aren't quite as good as those in Excel. So what, buttons? No, it means the poor man's quicken won't be very cool. That begs the question is Windows really the answer (sorta kinda). I like Dapper but it is causing some problems, like every update requires more work because it breaks the OpenGL for my video card. I don't really want to have Windows again because I like this whole linux bit, but I like being able to do stuff without having to work too hard or it breaking. Maybe I'll put xubuntu on the IBM and just use that. Such difficult decisions to make. The next post might just be from a windows version of firefox.

Champions x 2

They did it. Even with jackass Zidane throwing his head around, they did it. Any surprisingly, so did I. The Italians winning the World Cup not only made me happy for that reason but they also helped me win my pick'em group. How that happened I'm not sure but I'll take it. I was glad to see Zidane leave the game. All the commentators could talk about was how great he was this and how great he was that. Not so great when you headbutt someone like that. I'm glad Italy won for many reasons, not just because it is a shame to lose to the French in anything. This is the perfect seque into my learning to speak Italian. I'll keep you posted on how that goes. Ciao.

Clean counters are the tool of the devil

So it's been a while but it's light out later so I'm occupied. Anyway, I got to go back to Colorado which was fantastic. Not only did I get to play lots of golf with my dad and just hang out with my family but I got to not be in Massachusetts which is a joy unto itself. I realized I have more faithful readers than I realized. Hic Vir Punit (he isn't one of them but that was his latin name) My latin name was Spiritus Spati. If you know what that means without looking it up it either means that you are a super latin nerd, or Hic Vir Punit, Avus Vir or Dr. Capt. Kent. All my dog guilt for leaving Xanja was replaced with dog guilt for getting her back. She had a lovely time with the people who watched her and they loved having her. She enjoyed laying around their backyard, something we don't have. So it's perfect, guilty when I leave guilty when I come home, pure proof she is a female. Once it starts getting darker earlier I'll probably work on my projects, a poor mans quicken for openoffice, a music sorter in perl/xml. Maybe if it is good enough I'll post the quicken somewhere and someone will use it and like it and pay me millions of dollars and then I won't have to work and I can move to Colorado. Probably not. I also have a new line of clothing, it has awesome German Shepherd Dog (did you know that dog is part of the official name? bet you didn't) heads on them, sewed by the best sewer around, ma. Xanja's pooped from the park and so am I so I'll get off this thing, plus it is getting close to be time for Degrassi. Yeah, you heard me. If I had dish it would be Degrassi in HD. Sleepy Xanja says goodnight.

Dapper Drake is up and running

The transformation is complete. Wireless check, mouse kinda check, video card check and quicken check. I found crossover office to be a nice tool and I might even keep it and pay for it so I can keep Dapper Drake and still have linux too. On another note, Charlee Bear treats are like crack for dogs. It's amazing, they look like oyester crackers and dogs go crazy for them. If you've got a dog and a Trader Joe's in the neighborhood go check them out. Also, for those very interested readers I will be dining at La Vineria next weekend, with the owner. Amanda made friends with her, Giovanna, on the bus ride and now we have a double date. Should be very interesting since she is a 40 year old woman from Italy and in the 2 seconds I met her seems very friendly. Ok, time to make the donuts, or here that means feed the dog.

1 down, millions to go

Why did I change back to Windows before? Oh yeah, Linux is a pain. So I finally got my wireless working again, new router + realizing I needed to turn off the NIC before it would work. Oh well, now it's time to try and get Quicken working in Wine. Something tells me that might be a losing battle but it's worth a shot.

Hello World! Goodbye Windows.

So it's been a long time and my crappy internet has driven me to the brink. I figured it was probably not a Windows problem but I would blame it on that anyway. So I backed up and decided I'm going back to Ubuntu. Either way I have to get a new router so I might as well start getting back to being nerdy and having a more stable computer. That is all.

2 ponds in one day, you gotta be kidding

It's finally over. I purchased (in a sense) a new cell phone today. After missing a call from London on my stupid no vibratey and ring-when-I-feel-like-it phone I decided to get myself over the store to ensure that won't happen. I decided to not get the blackberry and not even consider it. I'm so proud of myself for that. It's tough for me not to get the most high tech gadget but I wasn't going to utlize the features and I didn't want to spend the money. So it was between two motorola phones and the nokia candy bar. Because I know so few people read this, if you want to see the winner you have to click on the link <-. Also, if you refer to the previous post I called cell phone salesmen scum. They still mostly are but the guy I talked to today actually told me it would take over an hour to process my upgrade since I am out of market, when I mentioned I should do it online he basically said yes. I have to wonder if he just gave up his commisission to save a few minutes. Anyway, worked out well for me because I got the phone even cheaper online since I have a Colorado number. For that long long list of reasons why Colorado is better than Massachusettes add that to the list as well. Anyway, it's time to sit back in the lay-z-boy and gather strength to tackle what lurkes in the kitchen and fridge. Ugh.
